Costa Rica Overview

Lush tropical rainforests cover nearly 60% of Costa Rica drawing travelers worldwide to experience the “Pura Vida” first hand.  Costa Rica is an ecological success story having re-forested nearly 20% of it’s territory since the 1980s.  Add in beautiful sandy beaches, stunning volcano wilderness, and vibrant San Jose, and you have an epic adventure awaiting. Just be sure you are prepared against a familiar foe, the mosquito.

As a middle-income country Costa Rica has one of the best public health systems in the world and prioritizes access to residents in rural areas. Despite these advances, the number of reported malaria cases has increased steadily since 2017.  Travelers visiting certain regions of Costa Rica may be at risk for infection and may be recommended medication to prevent illness.

The Anopheles species of mosquito is the main source of malaria infections and is found throughout Costa Rica.  Monkeys can also be infected with the parasite that causes malaria, making complete eradication of the disease difficult.
