Fiji attracts many tourists to this South Pacific nation because of it’s stunning beaches and natural beauty including opportunities to snorkel and scuba.  But before visiting for your holiday get-away be aware of food and water health risks including typhoid fever.

What is Typhoid Fever?

Simply put, typhoid fever is a type of Salmonella and is spread when a person ingests food or water contaminated with the bacteria.  Once exposed to typhoid fever, a person often develops high fever and abdominal pain, diarrhea, and severe headaches often leading to hospitalization. Left untreated, typhoid fever can be life-threatening and lead to death

Typhoid Fever Risk in Fiji

Given the idyllic setting, the risk of typhoid fever in Fiji may not be immediately obvious to visitors.  But public health, including CDC, recommends the typhoid fever vaccine to travelers, especially if you plan to travel outside of normal tourist hubs.  Typhoid fever is endemic to Fiji, meaning, the risk for infection is present in the community. A single meal or drink can put you at risk for typhoid fever because it can be found in street food, drinks with ice, or untreated tap water used to clean dishes or even brushing teeth
